Some More Things The College Admissions Office Won't Tell You

October 15, 2012

Last month we gave you some college admissions food for thought (as if those applying to college, and their weary parents, needed more to think about), in our post, Ten Things The College Admissions Office Won't Tell You.

Now, just when you thought it was safe to wade back into the Common App, a few more things admissions officers know but are not saying, via a timely piece in Business Insider, out of the mouth of an admissions officer at Dartmouth College (speaking on the condition of anonymity, to protect the guilt-ridden, no doubt :-).

Check out, Confessions of an Admissions Officer: Here's What They Don't Tell You About Getting Into An Ivy League School.

Among the obvious, the college essay is very important. DUH! And the not so obvious -- race matters; Early Action may be less competitive than Regular Decision; and the middle class gets squeezed -- so what else is new?

Yes, something else to read, ponder and consider (add it too the pile) as deadlines loom large and college applications dance like so many daggers in your dreams.

Still, to be forewarned is to be forearmed!

In October, What Could Be Spookier Than Applying To College?

October 4, 2012

The ghostly apparitions that appear at your front door disguised as the Common App. Goblins that stealthily roam your laptop at night, scrambling the letters on your personal statement and supplemental essays. And fear of all fear, as witches and warlocks gather 'round the cauldron at the college admissions office.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. The college application season is upon us!

And if the process of applying to college wasn't itself haunting, then surely the selectivity that has become the hallmark of colleges and universities across the great pumpkin patch is enough to make you cough up every last candy corn.

Think we're playing a nasty trick on you? Think again.

Just look at a few of the grade/score averages (courtesy of CollegeData.com) for the admitted college classes of 2016:

College                                            GPA      SAT Math      SAT Verbal      SAT Writing   ACT
Tulane University                               3.99         656                 672                  677               30
Northeastern                                      4.06         654                 633                  642               29
Virginia Tech                                      3.97         648                 622                  616               28
Syracuse                                             3.73         608                 612                  610               28
Binghamton                                       3.93          641                622                  634               30

Need we go on? "Competitive" does not begin to describe just how tough it has become to gain admission to the college of choice. Downright frightening is what most people call it!

Yes, the road to college can be scary, with ghouls, goblins and more than a few witches popping out along the way to frighten both students and parents (most of whom, Halloween haunts notwithstanding, are already, shall we say, unnerved).

Is you application accurate? Has your essay given you voice among the cacophony (great SAT word) of hoots and hollers raised by your fellow college-bound compatriots? Did you complete every required section and answer each question on your application? Is it good enough to get you in? What about those Supplements? And how the heck do you pay for and submit this &^%$#@! Common App? Will those college application tricks defer your college admission treats?

Applying to college should not be a hair-raising experience, essays, resumes, activity sheets, and those howling supplements masking the true you, and all you are capable of doing, being, achieving. Certainly, the last thing you want to do is scare off the one admission officer you want most to impress.

So, don't just get your college applications done. Get them done correctly, accurately and completely.

College is a six-figure investment. Before you hit that "SUBMIT" button, consult with your "college investment advisor".

And by the way, have a happy, and safe, Halloween!

Plan. Prepare. Prevail!

The Polls vs. The Rankings

October 3, 2012

Another day (another hour?), another Election Poll. State Polls. National Polls. Morning Polls. Evening Polls. Polls of groups, genders, parties, you name it. Presidential Polls. Senate Polls. Polls of Polls. Why, I think I even saw a Maypole thrown in there.

An article appeared in the recent edition of New York Magazine, not exactly extolling polls, but rather, detailing how polls have become as much a part of the daily political landscape as radio and TV spots proclaiming, "...and I approve this message," and given their random nature, obscure methodology, questionable sampling, and so forth, have been rendered about as meaningless as they are numerous. Read, The. Polls. Have. Stopped. Making. Any. Sense.

And then there are those College Rankings. Not quite as numerous, perhaps, but, to those who choose to read between the lines -- or on them -- just as senseless. Best public colleges. Best private colleges. Best party schools. Best food on campus. Best extra long dorm mattress. And on they go.

We've rambled on about -- and mostly against -- taking the rankings (or any of them) seriously, questioning not only their veracity and appropriateness (as if one size college fits and fills all), but also, their impact upon higher education in general, and upon colleges that, for reasons lame or logistic, simply did not rank high on the list, if rank at all.

Even the main stream media -- ala The New York Times -- has railed against taking the college Rankings too seriously, going so far as to call them "silly." See, The College Rankings Racket. [And if you read it in The New York Times, certainly it must be true! :-)]

And yet, both the Polls and the Rankings persist. Incessant. Impervious to scrutiny. Inane and, while seemingly innocuous, preying upon our emotions, our thought processes, our desires and, sometimes, our very will to log onto the Internet or open that magazine.

Are they accurate? Are they biased? [Sometimes it is difficult to tell Rasmussen from Rove -- literally!] And when the twain shall meet, as in distinguishing Quinnipiac, the Poll from Quinnipiac, the university... Oh boy!

Notwithstanding our disdain for both Polls and Rankings, we (that's the editorial "we") relentlessly harp upon them, call attention to them, dissect them and, in instances both critical and whimsical, draw upon them in our decision-making.

What more can be said than to take the Polls and the Rankings with that proverbial grain of salt. [Morton's should be raking it in by now!] Mileage may vary, even in the best of 'em. Still, they are fun to look at, interesting to talk about, and of great value -- especially when it comes to selling newspapers, magazines and air-time.

Just remember -- As in the old adage, the only poll that counts is on election day (so be sure to vote) and, as concerns those college rankings, to paraphrase the great and powerful Oz (the Wizard, not the Doctor), pay no attention to those lists between the magazine covers!

I'm The College Whisperer, and I approve this message.

One Year Later: Are College Net Price Calculators Working?

October 1, 2012

P.B. of Plainview, NY writes:

I've been trying to figure out college costs by using the Net Price Calculators as appear on most college websites. Are they accurate?

The College Whisperer responds:

Ah, yes. The Net Price Calculator. Created for the good of the college student (and his/her parents). But have we instead created a Frankenstonian distopia?

Assuming (and you know what happens when we do that) every college used the very same calculator, taking into account exactly the same factors, and actually "calculated" costs by methodology reduced to one, uniform formula, one might actually be able to arrive at a reasonable -- if not entirely good faith -- estimate of college costs.

Problem is, while colleges that receive Title IV federal aid are required to maintain and post on their websites a Net Price Calculator, they are not required to utilize the same calculator, let alone the data and number-crunching by which they ultimately arrive at the bottom line figure commonly known as your cost.

Call it The Price Is Right of college cost calculating. Try to compare the costs at one college by way of its Net Price Calculator to that of another college using the second college's Net Price Calculator, and you might as well be comparing the price of apples to a spanking new Maserati.

Then, too, you have to take into account a college's "puffing," as in, "We tell you only as much as we want you to know, and, sometimes, only what you want to hear."

The Wall Street Journal published an article earlier this year that goes to the very heart of the Net Price Calculator conundrum. Read, When Colleges Lowball Costs.

Armed with a single, standard, universal Net Price Calculator, you might find some semblance of uniformity, if not accuracy. Then again, perhaps not. Ever try calculating an exact "due date" using a "Pregnancy Calculator"? [Okay, let's not go there! ;-)]

Of course, you can always consult your Ouija board or local psychic when attempting to figure out what college will cost you. When using the Net Price Calculator -- any Net Price Calculator -- it is Caveat Emptor. Or better put, Student Beware. As with most of life's calculations, YMMV -- Your Mileage May Vary!
- - -
To level the playing field somewhat when calculating college costs, try to use the same Net Price Calculator for each college. Alas, is there a "universal" Net Price Calculator? Well, we did manage to find one. Of course, it's the Net Price Calculator for the Universal Beauty School! Who knew? :-)

To The College Fair -- Or Not!

September 21, 2012

Long Island National College Fair
Sunday, September 30, 11 AM - 3 PM
Nassau Coliseum
Check out the Long Island College Conference Manual

A couple of years ago, a reader inquired as to whether it was worth going to the National College Fair. A number of errant links (they tend to break or disappear over time) aside, the advice on the Fair is certainly as valid today as it was then, and well worth repeating.

L.B. of North Merrick, NY writes:

There's a College Fair coming up at the Nassau Coliseum. Is it worth attending, for college-bound students and/or their parents?

The College Whisperer responds:

A definite maybe. ;-)

In days of old, long before the advent of the Internet and the coming of age of electronic media, other than visiting campus after campus (there were no virtual tours), and relying on snail mail for glossy brochures and, if you were lucky, a course bulletin or two, college fairs were it.

A place to gather much needed information on colleges and universities, far and wide; to schmooze with admissions officers; to pick brains on financial aid, program selection, and where to get a decent manicure in walking distance to the campus. Not to mention more give-aways -- from pens to notepads, rulers to tee shirts -- than you could possibly stuff into a bag, which was also a give-away (go canvas, not plastic).

Enter the era of the worldwide web, and, in terms of connecting to colleges and bookmarking Viewbooks, to paraphrase Walt Disney on the portended decline of the College Fair, it all started with a mouse. [Different mouse. Same idea.]

Today, you can get all the information you need (and much that you don't) on college websites, supplemented by touchy-feely material that schools will be happy to send you (again and again) by snail mail. [And you wonder where all those tuition dollars go!] Many colleges even offer prospective students "live chat" sessions and/or "webinars" hosted by admissions and financial aid officers, providing a virtual cornucopia for students without ever having to leave the comfort of home (or change out of their PJs, as if that would be a consideration).

And yet, folks continue to flock to College Fairs, some 400,000 annually, according to the folks at the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), sponsors of the still popular and well attended National College Fairs.

Why do most people go to the fairs, absence of cotton candy and midway games notwithstanding? Some go to meet and greet reps from smaller colleges, or those too far away to visit. Not sure if the University of Guam has a booth, but you can have a nice talk -- at length -- about your prospects with a representative of, say, the University of North Dakota, gaining insight and perspective that you would not be likely to find online. [At last year's College Fair at the Nassau Coliseum, The College Whisperer had a most lovely chat with the rep from UND. She seemed so lonely, tucked away in the corner, few students stopping by, even just to say "hi." Take solace, North Dakota. While you may not pull in many kids from New York, at least you have Mount Rushmore. Wait. That's South Dakota! Never mind...]

Others stop by the College Fair, fighting their way, goodie bags in hand, through the madding throngs, hustling from table to table, packed in like sardines (hopefully, with skin and bones), to supplement what they already secured through the Internet, or to ask specific questions, assuming they can get close enough to the table. [Don't expect to do much more than to sign up for additional info, typically sent to you by e-mail or snail mail, at the booths of the most popular schools.]

The College Whisperer used to tell his students, back in the day, to sort through the give-aways from each college, applying to those schools that have the best gizmos, gadgets and sticky pads. [After all, they have the most money to spend!] Alas, just this past College Fair season, NACAC declared give-aways to be off-limits, citing a possible "unfair advantage" to those schools that do not or cannot hand out the upper level premiums. [Duh! Wasn't that the idea? Lull them in with frisbees and gel pens, then let them eat Sloppy Joes four nights a week in the dining hall. Too bad Oprah wasn't in on this. She'd give-away cars or a year of study abroad in Australia to every student who came through the door. Oh well..]

Most people, students and parents alike, even those well-versed in the nuances of Internet searches, go to the College Fair because (a) they are curious, (b) everyone else they know is going, and (c) they're afraid they will miss something (who knows what?) if they don't go. [Heaven forbid someone gain the upper hand by standing on line half an hour just to get a Viewbook they could have downloaded in 15 seconds (broadband sold separately ;-)].

Go to the fair? Sure. Why not? But first, pick up a copy of the Long Island College Conference Manual at your Guidance Office. It is a must read before the Fair, and will come in very handy at the Fair. [You can even scan QR codes for information.]

Careful that you don't park next to the fella with the dents and rust all over his pick up truck. Check out the colleges that you may have overlooked online. Look for The College Whisperer in the crowd (and ask him how College Connection can give you the competitive edge in the application and admission process).

Can't make it to this year's College Fair? No sweat! Local high schools -- most likely yours -- often host College Fairs or College Application/Admission Days. Be certain to attend. You may not learn anything new, but, hey, you never know.

And NACAC may be the biggest, but they're not the only College Fair game in town. Here's a list of College Fairs in New York, courtesy of HESC, NYS Higher Education Services Corporation. Why, there are even virtual College Fairs available online, where you can get advice, search for scholarships, and, perhaps, even be recruited by a school that's interested in you!

Whether you choose to attend the College Fair, or not, you'll have questions, seek answers, and be, more or less (probably more, given the barrage of information thrown your way), as overwhelmed as ever by the college application and admission process.

Have no fear. That's why The College Whisperer and College Connection are here. We help students and their parents successfully navigate the road to college. It's what we do!

See you at the fair!
