2016-17 Common App Essay Prompts

January 29, 2016

"Second verse, same as the first..."

A heads up on the essay prompts for the 2016-17 Common Application (the ones this year's high school juniors will be pondering). They will remain the same as the 2015-16 essay prompts. [Click HERE to read the release from the folks at Common App.]

Good news, indeed, as high school juniors can now begin to work on -- or at least give serious thought to -- their Common App essay. And since you can create your Common App account NOW for 2016-17 (for students who will graduate high school in 2017), and actually start working on the Common Application (your data will be saved and carry over when the Common App for 2016-17 goes "live" on August 1), you can truly get a jump start on your college applications!

Find the Common App at www.CommonApp.org

Before You Say YES To Any College. . .

December 23, 2015

A word to the wise regarding those college acceptances -- wait until AFTER you receive your financial aid awards from ALL colleges you've been accepted to, BEFORE you say YES to any college!

The next step in the college admissions game (after you've submitted the last of your applications) is to get the money you need to pay for college.

If you have received that coveted letter (or email, text, Tweet) and you've been accepted to the college of your choice, congrats! Now sit back, relax, and wait for those other acceptances to roll in. [Remember, you have until May 1, 2016 to tell that college, "I'm coming." They made you wait. Now, the tables have turned. Play the game and you may be able to turn that acceptance into money (or more money than you thought) for college!]

What next? [I thought you'd never ask.] Here is your "To Do" List (be sure to check it twice):

  • On or After January 1: Prepare and submit the FAFSA. [Yes, every college requires FAFSA. No, you cannot submit FAFSA before January 1. Yes, you should submit FAFSA regardless of income, assets, or any other indicia of wealth. No, do not wait until you file your 2015 tax returns. JUST DO IT!]

  • Complete and submit any and all college-specific financial aid forms. Be aware of college-specific deadlines for financial aid!

  • ONGOING [until that last tuition bill has been paid]: Search and apply, apply, APPLY for scholarships, both school-specific and outside scholarships. [You CAN graduate college debt-free!]

  • AFTER You Receive Financial Aid Awards from All Colleges You've Been Accepted To: Compare. Contrast. Be prepared to negotiate for more money from the college of your choice. [Yes, almost all school-based awards are negotiable. Don't be afraid to ask for more. The worst they can say is, NO!]

Having done all of the above (in most instances, by early March), you are ready to say YES!

MAXIMIZE YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD!

  • Contact COLLEGE CONNECTION to schedule a session (with parents) to prepare and submit the FAFSA.

How's that scholarship search going? Needle in a hay stack? Given up? Haven't even started?

  • Contact COLLEGE CONNECTION to schedule a session for The Great Scholarship Search!

FAFSA | Just Do It!

December 3, 2015

Yes, FAFSA! [Free Application for Federal Student Aid] Required by every college, not only for student loans, Work-Study, and federal grants, but, in many instances, for institutional aid, including the colleges' own scholarships and merit awards!

FAFSA FACTUAL

Who must submit FAFSA? YOU must submit FAFSA!

Incoming college freshmen/Current high school seniors. Complete and submit your first FAFSA for the 2016-17 school year on or after January 1, 2016*.

Those already in college. Graduate students. Complete and submit your FAFSA Renewal for the 2016-17 school year on or after January 1, 2016*.

*The rules on FAFSA submission are changing in 2016. READ, FAFSA Is Changing: Count Your College Change

Can I File The FAFSA BEFORE January 1*? Which part of on or after January 1 did you not understand? 1/2 LOL

If there is a tuition bill on the horizon, you MUST submit FAFSA.

FAFSA Deadlines. FAFSA should be submitted early -- meaning in January. Do NOT wait until you file your 2015 tax return. [A "corrected" FAFSA will be submitted after tax returns are filed.] Financial aid is often doled out on a first-come/first served basis. When the money is gone, it's gone. Be aware, as well, of both State and college-specific filing deadlines.

Do I Submit FAFSA Every Year? Absolutely! If you do not submit FAFSA, you risk leaving money -- very often, FREE money -- on the table.

NEW FOR 2016 - The FSA-ID. READ, Pins And Needles; FAFSA, No PINs All students -- new and returning -- MUST have an FSA-ID.[Two, actually. One for the student. One for a custodial parent.]

It's Sooooo Complicated. Who Can Help Us? Umm, Helloooooo. That's what we're here for. From choosing a college to paying for college, your "go-to" guy (a/k/a The College Whisperer) is here to help! Call (516-345-8766), Email (info@CollegeConnect.info), Text, or send a Smoke Signal (Smoke Signal rates may apply).

More Info, Please! Check out The FREE FAFSA Guide. [It was for last year's FAFSA, which is probably why its free. :-)] Download it. Read it. Then, plan ahead so you will be ready to submit your FAFSA in January.

What About The CSS ProfileYes, if the colleges you have applied to require the Profile, submit it. [For students already in college, check to see if your school requires a new Profile each year. If so, submit it.] Be very careful with deadlines for the Profile. They crop up very early, particularly for those who apply Early Decision/Early Action.

Outside Scholarships? Yup, that's where the real FREE money is hidden, just waiting for you to get your sticky little fingers on it! Know where to find scholarships, which ones to apply to, and the best practices for actually getting your hands on some of that free money. Go beyond what is offered in your financial aid package in your quest for money to pay for college.

Whether you are still in high school or already in college, if you are not searching and applying for scholarships, you are losing the opportunity to get FREE MONEY!

Did Someone Say Something About $500? Sure did! Simply Refer A Student to us for college planning/counseling (or any part thereof), and for each referral, earn an entry into a random drawing (on or about December 30) for $500 in cold, hard cash (no FAFSA required for this one).

Confused? Overwhelmed? Still Grappling With The Common App? [Watch those Deadlines!] For goodness sake, CONTACT US!!! 516-345-8766. Or text, email, send a smoke signal. [For this month only, NO smoke signal rates will apply!]

A Fall Guide For The College Bound

November 4, 2015

WELCOME TO NOVEMBER!

Almost time to stick that Thanksgiving turkey in the oven (and can that Christmas music be far behind?). [By all rights, if the heralding of Christmas (1 day) begins the day after Halloween, the festivities for Chanukah (8 days) should start right after Valentine's Day. Just sayin'... Wink]

Anyway...

Early Action. Early Action II (like hitting the snooze button?]. Regular Decision. Now is the time to put those finishing touches on the yet unsubmitted applications. Dot the i's. Cross the t's. Answer the optional supplemental questions. Be mindful of deadlines. Do not wait for the last minute.

Portfolios. For those with Art or other program-specific portfolios, be aware that these must be submitted separate and apart from your applications (usually, through Slideroom). Be mindful of portfolio deadlines.

Report Test Scores. Remember, you MUST report test scores (ACT, SAT, SAT II, AP) to colleges you apply to (when they require scores for admission) directly from College Board and/or ACTstudent. The unofficial report of scores on your applications does not cut it.

NOTE: For those awaiting scores from the October ACT, they are scheduled to be available online (well, maybe not the Writing) on November 10. Update your applications accordingly, and be aware of November 15 EA deadlines.

***ACT is experiencing "delays" with the reporting of scores from the September test. If you submitted an ACT Score Report from the September test, make sure the colleges you sent them to actually received them. Some colleges are emailing students about test scores. Read emails and follow all instructions. And don't worry. Colleges are aware of the issue and will await your scores, even though they may arrive after deadline.***

Update Naviance. After you submit your applications, be sure to update Naviance (under, Colleges I Am Applying To). Keep Guidance in the loop! [Submit all forms as may be required by your high school.]

Read Your Emails! 'Nuf said...

Check those "Application Checkers" Regularly. Log on to the college web portal at least once a week. Make sure they have everything they need (transcripts, recommendations, school reports, test scores) to consider your application. ALLOW FOR LAG TIME. It could take a week or two, after material is received, before the website is updated. Be vigilant, but be patient!

Prepare and Submit the CSS-Profile. For those colleges that require this College Board administered fin aid form. Yes, it is primarily used to determine eligibility for need-based aid, but some colleges use the Profile as their application for merit aid and internal scholarships. If a school you have applied to is on the Profile college list, complete and submit.[Yes, we can help with that!]

NOTE: The FAFSA, required by ALL colleges, and not just for student loans and Pell grants), can be completed on or after January 1. Sit tight.

***You Need A FSA-ID. For those new to FAFSA, StudentLoans.govStudentAid.gov, or other federal aid websites, you must create a FSA-ID to gain access. For those returning to FAFSA, etc., the PIN you created is no longer in use. You must create a FSA-ID. [Read, Pins and Needles; FAFSA, No PINs] [Yes, we can help with that, too!]***

NOTE: For the do-it-yourselfers - You need to create TWO (2) FSA-ID's. One for the student. One for a parent.

The Great Scholarship Search. Because free money trumps (no, not THAT trump) student debt. Know where to find scholarships, which ones to apply to, and the best practices for actually getting your hands on some of that free money. Go Beyond Fastweb in your quest for scholarships. CALL TO SCHEDULE A SCHOLARSHIP SESSION!

Speaking of Scholarships!  It's November. Have you applied this month for the $2000 No Essay Required Scholarship? [I didn't think so... Still waiting for Ed McMahon to knock at your door?] There are dozens of scholarships out there just as easy to apply for. Monthly. Even weekly. But you have to be in it to win it!

And One More Opportunity To Score Some Cold, Hard Cash. Refer a student (or the parent thereof) to College Connection. Each referral garners you a chance to pick my pocket for $500. [Random drawing on or about December 4.]

Questions? Concerns? Leftover candy from Halloween (just the good stuff)? When in doubt, give a shout out -- 516-345-8766. We are always here to help!

P.S. Ask us about the IJMIU form. Really. Just ask... Surprised

On That Path To College: No Stone Unturned!

October 22, 2015

Just the other day, The College Whisperer -- also known as "Current Occupant" in certain postal circles, received a piece of unsolicited mail. Not email, mind you, but actual snail mail, at bulk rate, no less.

Keeping with my practice of opening every piece of mail that crosses my desk -- and actually reading it -- I sliced off the top of the envelope and pulled out what I soon realized was an invitation to take a survey. Innocuous, and otherwise destined for the circular file, until I saw, tucked inside the form letter, a crisp, new $1 bill. [Now if I could only get my hands on a million of such solicitations, I'd have it made! :-)]

Granted, the letter was promptly discarded. The dollar bill, on the other hand... Well, I consider myself just a little wiser and a dollar richer for having opened and read what others would have simply thrown away. [I leave to The Ethicist whether, knowing that I would never take the survey, I should have kept the dollar, donated same to a worthy cause (charity begins at home, doesn't it?) or returned the greenback to the sender.]

The point here is that you never know what you may find in the mail -- or email -- that may well help you in your college quest, let alone in your search for money to pay for college.

A letter from a college offering you the opportunity to apply fee-free. An email from a university that considers you a perfect fit for one of its coveted programs -- together with a sweet financial aid package to help you pay for it. A teaser from one of the many scholarship search engines offering you a legit opportunity to win thousands in scholarship dollars, simply by completing an online profile. Why, you may even get an unsolicited email from The College Whisperer™, giving you the inside scoop on the college application and admissions process. Hey, you never know!

You'll be getting lots of mail -- and email -- now that you're applying to college. After all, everyone from College Board to the Common App has been gathering vital information on you, then turning around and selling it to colleges, banks, booksellers and retailers of extra long twin sheets.

You are on the list. Now, the opportunity to turn trash into treasure.

Snail mail is easy. Take a few minutes to open every letter and read each postcard. Most may be duds, but a few gems will turn up over the course of the next eight months or so.
Email is a bit more tricky, what with spam and a plethora of new viruses appearing daily in your inbox. Sometimes it's not that easy to weed out the prospects from the propaganda.

An easy fix, which will also make the task of retrieving college-related email a breeze: Set up a dedicated email account for all your college stuff. [Gmail is a good bet, with little or no spam and virtually no clutter]. Use this email address for all of your college communications, including Common App, scholarship search engines and direct contact with schools.

Keeping track of important messages -- as well as potentially beneficial opportunities -- will be a cinch, and you won't miss a thing that might otherwise go astray in your general email account.

And while you're online, create, enhance and, by all means, clean up your online presence. Have a Facebook account? LinkedinTwitter? By all means, you should. Just watch what you post or Tweet. Imagine that you will be followed (dare we say, stalked?) by every college admissions officer [They don't often look, but post as if they spy on you daily]. If you put it out there -- and do put it out there -- make absolutely sure that they will "Like" what they see!

The key is to maximize what you already use every single day -- the Internet, email and, though concededly less often, the United States Postal Service. Turn what many consider an annoyance into an advantage -- or, in terms of that which will prove invaluable in your college quest and your search for the money that's out there to pay for your college education, an annuity. In other words, when it comes to looking for colleges (or narrowing down the list), applying to colleges and even paying for colleges, leave no stone unturned!

Early Action Deadlines Are Closer Than They Appear In The Rear View Mirror!

October 8, 2015

Just a quick reminder that Early Action deadlines for many colleges and universities are quickly approaching, with some only days away (UNC-Chapel Hill and the Georgia Tech, for instance, have Early Action deadlines of October 15th. That's next Thursday!).

Most Early Action Deadline fall between November 1 and November 15.

Some schools, such as the University of Maryland (November 1), have what is known as Priority Deadlines. While not Early Action, in the traditional sense, apply by the Priority Deadline for your application to recieve the most favorable consideration for admission and/or scholarships.

Be sure to confirm all deadline dates, which can be found, for Common App colleges, under the My Colleges tab and, assuming you have answered the Supplemental Questions, selecting Early Action for the admission plan, on the Dashboard; in Naviance, under Colleges I'm Thinking About or Colleges I'm Applying To; and on the college websites themselves, typically under Admissions/Application Deadlines.

When in doubt, check it out!

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO EITHER COMPLETE OR SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATIONS!

***If you need to schedule a session prior to submission deadlines, or would like an online review of your applications, contact me ASAP***

READ, Early Action. The New Regular Decision!

AND REMEMBER: It is always better to submit a complete and accurate application Regular Decision, than one that is half-baked, Early Action.

Questions? Concerns? Pumpkin pie? Call, text, email or smoke signal (smoke signal rates may apply :-).

A Guide To The Common Application

July 30, 2015

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know that The Common Application, home to some 600 college applications, goes "live" for 2015-16 on August 1 (that's this coming Saturday, for those who may be calendar adverse).

And so, courtesy of our friends and colleagues at The Prospect, here's a Step-by-step guide to filling out the common app

Okay, so this guide presumes that Hogwarts is your first choice (is that school even on Common App?), and it is based on the 2014-15 version of The Common App (because this year's version is still officially under wraps).

Yes, Common App makes some changes for 2015-16. And HERE THEY ARE. Still, this guide will take you, section by section, through the intricate maze that, but for the absence of Dumbledore and the sorting hat, leads to those ivy-covered gates.

The ultimate guide to Common App and the wonderful world of college applications and admissions? Not quite. After all, that's what you have COLLEGE CONNECTION for!
